Bust of an old bearded Man, looking down, three quarters right. Etching. 1631. Signed. B. 260 II. M. 62. H. 47. 12:12 cm.
Slg./Coll.: Pierre J. Mariette, Paris 1603-1658 (L. 1789)
In the early 1630s, Rembrandt executed approximately six studies in etching of bearded old men. They are more like studies of facial expressions than real portraits.
Rembrandt explored the medium of dry-point. Neither the burin nor the crayon can produce such velvety dark tones in the deep shadows, such transparent half-tones or such slight,
tender strokes combined with so much liveliness. This is certainly one of Rembrandt's most impressive studies of old age.
Rembrandt's predilection for long-bearded patriarchal figures with wrinkled and troubled expressions is reflected in his later paintings representing scenes from the old testament.
Very fine impression in good condition. Removed stain above the man's head, almost invisible.
