This print belongs to a series of six small, oblong plates depicting the youth of Christ from his birth to his return from the temple, accompanied by his parents. The six etchings add together to make not only a thematic but also a stylistic whole. The simple and spontaneous manner of etching is well suited to the intimacy of the represented scene, a scene of spirituality, sympathy and participation. Excellent, cleanly inked impression of the first of two states, with the open parallel hatching strokes of the artistÕs later works.
