| Title |
Niederblickender Greis mit hoher Fellmütze/ Old Bearded Man in a High Fur Cap, with Eyes Closed |
| Description |
Around 1635. B.R.S./Hollst. 290. H. 130. B.-B. 35-3. Wm.: Strasbourg Lily. 11,3:10,3 cm. Studies of the face and head are prominent in Rembrandt's oeuvre. The posture of an old man looking down appears in numerous drawings and etchings of the period 1630-1635, which testifies for an attentive observation of the human being. In this character study, Rembrandt uses masses of coarse lines to construct the elements of the portrait. As if the old man's closed lowered eyes did not render the face inscrutable enough, Rembrandt masks all but the right cheek in black shadow. A high fur hat, which gives the old man a Middle Eastern, Biblical appearance, tops the composition. The portrait is not only readable as a revelation of character, but also as a remarkable study in chiaroscuro. Very fine early impression of the only state, with the fine vertical wiping lines in the background. Small margins. |
