| Description |
Coat of Arms with a Rooster. C. 1500. Engraving. M. 97b. Hollst. 97. B. 100. Dogson 37. Nat. Gallery of Art, WA, 1971, p. 130, no 28. Wm.: Jug. (M. 158). 18,4:11,7 cm.
This splendid heraldic design is closely related in style to the print „Coat of Arms with a Skull“ from 1503. Around this time, Dürer was particularly fascinated by rendering textures with the burin, and in this print, he seems purposely to have assembled objects with very diverse surface qualities. He treats them with consummate skill, finding precise linear equivalents for the
fluffy plumage of the cock, the highly polished jousting helmet, the shaggy mane of the lion and the brittle ornamental foliage.
Fine impression with rich shading on the cock and the heraldic lion rampant on the shield which quickly wears off. Trimmed on, or just inside the plate mark. |
