St John the Baptist is one of the liveliest figures among Schongauer's large engravings depicting a single saint. With the index finger of his right hand he points to the little lamb which lies on the book in the saint's left hand. With his mouth slightly opened, he faces the onlooker as if to say "Ecce Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi". Schongauer's " St John the Baptist" is clearly influenced by Flemish masters. Comparable representations with untidy curly hair, fur and naked legs are also to be found in the work such as the Master of Flémalle, Roger van der Weyden, and on the Berlin "Johannes-Altar".
