In 1762 Balthasar Anton Dunker received his first training from
Jakob Philipp Hackert who became his most important teacher and friend. The two travelled together to Sweden and in 1765 to Paris which was the focus for artists at the time. As a talented etcher end engraver Dunker soon got numerous engagements. After a short stay with Mechel in Basel, Dunker moved in 1773 to Bern and worked there for the rest of his life as
watercolorist, engraver, illustrator and poet.
